Position Summary:

Provide specialized companionship and support to veteran patients by utilizing shared military experience to build rapport, understanding, and trust. This unique role honors veteran patients’ service and provides a connection with someone who understands the military experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Visit veteran patients to provide companionship through shared military connection
  • Engage in conversation about military service (if patient is willing), sharing appropriate personal experiences
  • Participate in veteran recognition ceremonies/pinning ceremonies as available
  • Provide a listening ear for veterans who may wish to discuss military experiences
  • Assist with life review or reminiscence related to military service
  • Help veterans access veteran-specific resources or benefits information (through coordination with social work)
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries while utilizing shared experience to build therapeutic rapport
  • Complete visit notes documenting interactions and any veteran-specific observations

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum: 6 months
  • Hours per week: 2-4 hours (typically one weekly visit of 1-2 hours)
  • Schedule: Flexible based on volunteer and patient availability

Location:

  • Patient homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes within assigned geographic area
  • Occasional Melodia Care office or facility for veteran events

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Must be a military veteran (any branch, any era)
  • Completion of 16-hour core hospice volunteer training
  • Additional specialized training in veteran-specific end-of-life issues
  • Clear criminal background check and TB test
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (mileage reimbursement available)
  • Ability to share military experience appropriately while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Emotional maturity to handle potentially difficult military memories or experiences

Training Provided:

  • Core hospice volunteer training (16 hours)
  • We Honor Veterans training modules
  • Specialized training on veteran-specific end-of-life issues, PTSD awareness, and military culture
  • Training on appropriate sharing of personal military experiences
  • Ongoing continuing education on veteran services and benefits
